4 Best Quilt Rulers

Hi Quilters,

When you’re not a quilter, rulers are just objects that take up space in the wide drawers of your cabinets. I bet you have one that’s sitting there in the back, lying around, preventing you from reaching something important because it’s in the way, right?

And then you become a quilter and everything changes! And consequently your relationship with rulers changes too! Rulers are no longer tools, but treasures! Right?

After I became a quilter, I got past the "oh, I don't need that kind of tool" phase and discovered that having a collection of rulers is wonderful. I love my rulers, even though I only have a few. I plan on getting more!

Here are some of the best quilt rulers that will help you dominate the Quilt World. Good, right?

BEST QUILT RULERS

6" X 24"

If you only have one ruler, you need to have this as your standard, a 6" x 24" acrylic ruler. This ruler was my first and I still use it today. It is the only ruler that allows you to cut strips of fabric in meters, trim quilts or cut large blocks of a quilt. I use the Ominigrid ruler in the image above and recommend it.

6" x 12"

My second favorite is the 6" x 12" ruler, which I also have a special fondness for and which I still use today. This ruler is perfect for cutting smaller pieces of fabric and for using paper patterns.

1" x 6"

OMNIGRID RULER 1" X 6" acrylic - PRYM 611645

My third favorite ruler is this little 1" x 6" ruler. It's great for cutting English Paper Piecing or Foundation Piecing, as well as making seam allowances on small pieces.

SQUARE RULERS: 12.5" , 9.5" , 6.5" , 4.5"

My last favorite ruler is a great one. You have to have this pack of 4 rulers for yourself: square rulers. Everyone knows that we work with squares all the time, so it's only natural to have this set of square rulers. Consider investing in these square rulers, as they make it much easier to do your work and will take your level from beginner to advanced.

SUPER COOL EXTRAS

STRIPOLOGY RULERS (to cut several strips at once): This ruler is my dream. It helps you cut several strips at once and quickly. Isn't it perfect? Who doesn't want something that makes it easier to do? You simply place the ruler on the fabric in folded length and cut, cut, cut...! Delicious!!

RULER ORGANIZER : Well, after you have acquired a few pairs of rulers and have increased your collection, you will face the following situation: having a drawer or a compartment just for several rulers and other measuring materials piled up, where you look for what you want and when you find it, it is always at the bottom. Right? Get a ruler organizer! In addition to freeing up space for other things, it keeps your rulers from getting scratched or faded.

RULER GRIPPER : I don't know how to translate this into Portuguese, but this tool looks like the telephone wire we had at home, remember? This tool helps you keep the ruler more steady when cutting, and if you have problems with shoulder or wrist pain due to using too much force when cutting, it relieves that tension. It also prevents accidents like cutting your fingers with the blade.

BEST QUILT RULER: SERIOUS TALK ABOUT BRANDS

I know there are many brands on the market, many! I can only say that you should use a brand that satisfies you. Personally, I love Ominigrid rulers, because I really like how the measurements are displayed. Black and neon yellow is a perfect combination for my eyes, and in over 12 years of quilting, my rulers have never faded.

Now, I'm sure there are many brands that are just as good as Ominigrid on the market, so follow your preference and learn from experience when it comes to building your collection. I would say that it's wiser to stick with the same brand throughout the project, this helps a lot and your brain will accept this consistency in the measurement pattern better.

I would love to hear your opinion on your preference in rulers and your experience with each one. No one understands the fun that goes into measuring like a quilter, right? And if you want to know more about how I cut fabric, watch the video on my YouTube channel!

Happy sewing and see you next time!
